This game of roulette can be extremely exciting. When large numbers of players surround the wheel with a lot of bets being placed, the anticipation in waiting for the ball to landing in one of the pockets as it races around makes this game both suspenseful and exhilarating.
How to Play Roulette:
Maximising your chances in Roulette is based on numbers – the more numbers you bet on, the better your chances of winning. Players can bet on the first, second or third dozen, or any of the three columns.
The street bet involves betting on three numbers in a row beginning with the farthest left column number. The corner bet involves betting on four numbers, while the split bet occurs when a player bets on two numbers. Finally, the line bet is when the player bets on six numbers.
Players can also bet on odd and even numbers, as well as colours. Betting on combinations of these will increase your chances.
Improving your game in Roulette is really dependent on practice – keep trying until you are comfortable with the betting options and rules.
The Roulette Game
Roulette, French for little wheel, involves players placing bets on a single or range of numbers in red or black. The winning number and colour is determined by a ball running in the opposite direction to the spinning wheel until it comes to a halt in one of the 38 pockets on the wheel.
Numbers and colours on the wheel are replicated on the board or layout. Numbers on the board are laid out consecutively in three columns. This is where you place your chip to select a number and colour, and make your bet.
In live casinos, the dealer is called the croupier. When the roulette wheel determines the winning number and colour, the croupier places a marker (called a dolly) on the winning number on the board. While the dolly is on the board, players may not place, collect or remove bets from the table. Once the dolly is down, the croupier will remove all losing bets from the table with a rake or hand, and deal all payouts. Once payouts are made, the croupier removes the dolly and players can begin making new bets.
Most Roulette tables will have minimum and maximum bets that players can place. Often these will also differ according to inside or outside bets (explained further down).
The primary playing difference is human interaction. Playing live Roulette, you’ll be surrounded by other players and the croupier will interact with you. Online, players are of course solitary. Actual game play is the same in online and live versions. Before beginning a roulette game in an online casino, make sure you learn the betting practice of that individual casino, as these will differ just as live casinos.
Many Roulette wheels on online casinos will also remain stationary until you’ve locked in your bets.
Most online games will require you to place a bet by clicking on the betting area on the screen (a visual representation of a typical Roulette board) and clicking on a chip pile to increase the bet until you’re happy with the amount. There will also be an option to decrease your bet should you wish.
You will then click a “spin” button or similar to spin the wheel. Once the “ball” has landed, the window will display winnings and losses and allow you to continue betting.
Variety in Roulette largely resides in betting options. Bets are either “inside” or “outside”, wherein inside bets are chosen by either selecting the exact number of the pocket the ball will land in, or a small range of pockets depending on their closeness on the layout. Outside bets are based on larger groupings of pockets, pocket colour and odd or even numbers. Payout odds are based on probability.
There is also an American and European version. American Roulette has 38 numbers (1-36 with a single zero and a double zero), while European Roulette has 37 numbers (lacking the double zero).
Roulette, like slot machines, involves less skill than games like poker or Blackjack. However, in spite of the players’ inability to calculate where the ball will land, there are ways of maximising one’s chances. Spread bets wherever possible and hone your strategies by practicing on free demos before committing to bets in online casinos.
